How to choose your CME pathway and understand A/B exams
Start with the work you intend to do, confirm its registration requirements, then identify the matching A and B examinations. A course purchase or a single pass does not itself establish professional registration.

Begin with the role, not the exam number
Write a one-sentence description of the activity you want to perform: executing client orders, monitoring compliance, managing portfolios, or advising on corporate transactions. Job titles alone can be misleading because a title may cover several regulated activities. Take the description to your employer’s compliance or registration team and ask which registrable function applies. A student exploring careers can use the comparison tool to understand the subject areas before committing to a booking.
Keep a small decision record containing the intended activity, the person or official source that confirmed the requirement, and the date of the confirmation. This makes it easier to revisit the decision if the employer changes your responsibilities.
Use the five pathways as a starting map
The general pathway is CME-1; compliance and anti-money-laundering preparation is CME-2; securities brokerage is CME-3; wealth and investment management is CME-4; and corporate finance is CME-5. These are useful navigation labels, not a personal eligibility decision. Read the official audience description for both examinations in the relevant pair, then compare that description with the actual role.
For example, a candidate moving from operations into portfolio management should investigate the management pathway rather than assume that the introductory pair covers the new function. Similarly, a corporate finance analyst should not choose the brokerage pathway simply because both involve securities.
Understand what the letters mean
The A examinations develop the relevant international or technical subject knowledge; the corresponding B examinations focus on Saudi capital-market rules for that pathway. Treat the two parts as complementary study projects. Strong product knowledge does not remove the need to understand local responsibilities, and memorising rules does not replace the ability to interpret financial situations.
Confirm the qualification’s complete requirements, any recognised prior qualifications, and the position of existing certificates before booking. Do not infer exemptions, a compulsory examination order, or a right to perform regulated work from an informal discussion or an old certificate screenshot.
Make a practical choice between study sequences
Compare each syllabus with what you already know. If the technical vocabulary is unfamiliar, begin by building that foundation; if you work with the local rules every day, you may prefer to consolidate those while learning technical material alongside them. This is a study preference, not an official prerequisite. Check whether appointment availability and employer deadlines support your chosen sequence.
Estimate preparation time separately for each part. Reserve a period for mixed practice and corrections rather than placing the second examination immediately after the first without a plan. Use separate mistake logs so that a weak legal topic is not hidden by a strong technical score.
Turn the decision into a next step
Open the official exam page from the comparison tool and verify the code, language and current materials. Create a schedule for your first target examination and record the second part as a separate goal. Keep official examination payments separate from CMEPath learning access in your budget. If a requirement remains unclear, resolve that point before paying rather than choosing the exam with the shortest advertised preparation time.
Return to this decision record whenever your role, booking date or intended qualification changes. A clear pathway decision saves more effort than repeatedly restarting the wrong question bank.
