How to use mock exams and a mistake log effectively
Use chapter practice to diagnose understanding and timed mixed practice to examine coverage and pacing. Review wrong answers and lucky guesses, then test the repaired idea on a fresh example.

Choose the purpose before starting
A learning session and a mock session answer different questions. In a learning session, pause to investigate why an answer works and compare the explanation with your material. In a mock session, keep the agreed conditions and review explanations afterwards. Mixing the two without a purpose makes it difficult to interpret the result.
Write one sentence before the session: “I am checking whether I can apply market-conduct distinctions” or “I am checking pacing across mixed topics.” Choose the exam and language explicitly. Practising an adjacent pathway may be interesting, but it does not measure coverage of the examination you have booked.
Create conditions you can describe
For a timed set, use a quiet period, remove optional aids and decide in advance whether notes are allowed. Follow the selected practice mode consistently. Record the number attempted, time used and whether the questions were new or familiar. These details make comparisons between sessions meaningful.
CMEPath practice settings are preparation settings. They do not establish the current official question count, duration or passing standard. A practice score is an observation from that question set, not a pass prediction. Repeated exposure can increase a score because you recognise the item rather than understand the underlying concept.
Keep a mistake log that leads to action
For each useful error, record the date, topic, your reasoning, the error type, the corrected principle and a next action. Use categories such as knowledge gap, misread condition, wrong formula or time pressure. Include correct answers that you guessed or could not explain. Avoid copying full proprietary questions into a shared document; describe the concept in your own words.
Original example entry: “Current yield — divided annual income by face value instead of price — formula selection — annual income divided by current price — solve two new price variations tomorrow.” This tells you what to practise. An entry saying only “bonds wrong” does not.
Close the loop with a new problem
Read the relevant current material, then close it and explain the corrected idea. Make a small original example or use another authorised practice question that tests the same distinction with different facts. If you still need the old answer to solve it, the repair is incomplete. Schedule another retrieval after a gap.
At the end of the week, group errors by cause and topic. Ten errors from one misunderstanding may call for a single careful explanation and a few varied exercises. Ten unrelated errors may indicate incomplete coverage. Use this evidence to redistribute study time rather than simply taking another full mock immediately.
